Careers at Barbelle

“If you have enthusiasm, a positive attitude and a few basic fitness skills, I have a well paid, fun and fulfilling personal training position just for you!”

Dear Soon-to-Be Barbelle Coach,

First of all, thanks for taking the time to visit this site.
It is my hope that you have precisely what I need in a Health Professional so that I can put you to work in the fun and rewarding coaching position I have available.

So let’s get started, shall we?

My name is Ellen Quinn and I am the owner of Barbelle Health; a body-positive community-focused gym in Piercestown, Co. Wexford.
My business is dedicated to creating an inclusive, non-intimidating space for men and women of all ages to take part in enjoyable exercise – away from the toxic messages of diet culture and body shaming.

THE DEMAND IS GROWING FOR OUR KIND OF GYM – AND FOR OUR KIND OF COACHES!

I’m looking for an enthusiastic, motivated, and energetic person to start coaching our members.

We currently offer Small Group and Large Group holistic training sessions, that educate, motivate, and support men & women living locally to nourish body, mind & soul.

If you are hired for this coaching position, you’ll begin coaching clients in our facility  1 – 3 days per week for 2-4 hours per day, including evenings and early mornings – but no weekends!

My gym offers a casual, fun environment, nice training equipment and the opportunity to learn the inner-workings of a successful small business.

You will be compensated fairly, treated fairly and I will certainly look for ways to pay you more for your efforts if they warrant it. I want someone who enjoys working with people and making a difference in the lives of others… because that’s what we do here at Barbelle.

Our Expectations

  • Coach clients through their programme: You’ll be responsible for delivering weekly exercise sessions for Small Group Training as well as our Lunchtime "TimeSaver" classes. You will support, encourage and empower our members' to progress safely over time while also keeping notes for staff communication. If a member is having challenges throughout their programme, you’ll coach and motivate them and make appropriate changes to ensure consistent progress.
  • Demonstrate Proper Exercise Instruction: This is a big one. I need you to be able to provide proper coaching, instruction, and motivation to every member during the session. You should have a working knowledge of the human body (i.e. muscles, movements, functions, etc) and be able to provide exercise modifications to suit each member's ability in line with guidance from the Barbelle Exercise Modification Framework.
  • Provide Ongoing Health and Fitness Education & Support: Our members rely on us to service all of their health and fitness needs. It is your job as a expert coach to provide them with health and fitness education on various topics that will empower them to lead healthy lives forever. You’ll be provided with educational tools and resources, will be expected to speak to members in the group setting or indeed, if asked for advice 1-on-1. We also spend time covering this in our weekly staff meetings.
  • Light Cleaning & Maintenance of the reception area, gym and toilet facilities.

Required Skills

These are the skills you must already have in order to qualify for this position:

  • Health and Fitness Education: You do not need personal training experience, but you should have a working knowledge of health and fitness and hold a Personal Training qualification (EQF Level 3 or 4) as a minimum.
  • Good Communication Skills: you will be talking with my members, who are VERY important to me. You must be comfortable conversing in-person and on the phone and know how to conduct yourself professionally, and deliver clear instructions to the clients. I’ll teach you everything you need to do during a training session, but I can’t teach you manners and professionalism.

Bonus Skills & Knowledge

If you have these additional skills, your CV will go right to the top of the stack (but if you don’t have these skills, you should still apply because these are not mandatory).

  • Previous personal training experience (fitness studio, health club, in-home trainer, etc.)
  • Nutrition Qualification [eg Precision Nutrition, EIQ or another]
  • Understanding of Diet Culture & Fatphobia and how it can be harmful to our members
  • Spin instructor qualification
  • A Degree in Sports Science, Biomechanics, Physiotherapy (or similar)
  • Basic IT Skills with Outlook, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel
